MSN in Nursing Education Funding Policy

Purpose:  In light of the projected shortage of nursing faculty, it is the purpose of this policy to enhance the recruitment and retention of masters prepared nurse educators in the Greater Kansas City area through the funding of graduate study with an emphasis in the nurse educator role.

Eligibility:  Individuals must hold a BSN and/or meet admission requirements for graduate study in a nationally accredited nursing program and have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or above to apply.

StipulationsCompensation for each year will be up to a maximum of $2,500 per year for a total amount of $5,000.  The period of one-year may be defined as beginning in the fall, continuing through spring and summer.  Recipient has up to five years to complete their MSN.  For each $2,500 utilized, the individual is required to commit one-year of employment as a full-time or part-time (at least 20 hours per week) faculty member in the Greater Kansas City community following completion of the MSN.  If the individual does not complete the work agreement, the individual will need to repay the loan amount that corresponds with the remaining years of work commitment.  If the individual does not complete the MSN in five years, he/she must repay the total amount of the loan.  The funding may be used for tuition and fees only.  Individuals will be expected to sign a promissory note for each year of funding.  The funding will be considered taxable income to the individual.  Distribution of funds will be made following the submission of receipts for coursework.  Receipts for tuition and fees should be submitted to The Research Foundation.

One award per year will also be given as the Adrian and Margaret Harmon Scholarship for MSN in Nursing Education.  The scholarship award will be up to $20,000 for a period not to exceed 5 years for a total amount of $20,000. Recipient has up to five years to complete their MSN.  For the $20,000 utilized, the individual is required to commit two years of employment as a full-time or part time (at least 20 hours per week) faculty member in a College of Nursing at one of the 17 member schools of the Greater Kansas City Collegiate Nurse Educators following completion of MSN.  If the individual does not complete the work agreement, the individual will need to repay the loan amount that corresponds with the remaining years of work commitment.  The funding may be used for tuition, fees and books.  Individuals will be expected to sign a promissory note for the funding and the funding will be considered taxable income. Students must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.5 or above to be elligible to apply.

ProcedureApplications for funding should be made to The Research Foundation prior to enrollment.  Students currently enrolled in coursework may also submit applications for funding.  Once the application is approved, an agreement/promissory note with conditions of payment and employment will be signed by each recipient.  Recipients will continue to receive the annual award if it is determined by The Research Foundation that satisfactory progress is evident.  Individuals may request a one-year leave for extenuating circumstance based on Board approval.  For individuals who choose part-time study, funding distribution will be based on total number of credits completed per semester including summer sessions.  There is no deadline.  Applications are accepted throughout the year.

The Research Foundation, formerly the fund raising entity for Research Medical Center, became a separate non-profit organization following the sale of Health Midwest/Research Medical Center to HCA, a for-profit company on April 1, 2003.  The Foundation exists for the continued benefit of the communtiy and its improved health status.
